This journey Beyond Kitchen Stadium takes us to the world of Japanese idols. Not the kind that Indiana Jones goes after, but entertainment idols. This clip comes from the television show Hello! Morning. We get to see the girls of Mini Moni, including Nozomi Tsuji, do battle to see who is the best. (Hopefully, you remember Tsuji from the BKS videos with Tenmei Kano and Kandagawa and Shu. If not, go watch them now.)
Tsuji Nozomi, Kago Ai, and Morning Musume member Konno Asami face off in a Cake Battle. It is more of a dessert assembly battle than a cooking battle, but it is still fun to watch. See the girls make kitchen blunders. See the girls use ingredients that have no business being anywhere near a cake (mayonnaise and what I think is squid, to be specific). See Tsuji and Kago at their “Top Two” best. The clip is in Japanese with no subtitles.

For Kitchen Stadium’s first Christmas battle, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) winner is brought in as challenger: Jacques Borie, who won the medal at age 36 in 1982.
Just as Chairman Kaga is about to summon the Iron Chefs, he asks if Borie understands Japanese. “Oh yes,” Borie assures him. Kaga calls on his Iron Chefs with special fervor, and Borie selects Ishinabe, “the so-called sauce specialist of French cuisine,” for a French-on-French battle. The two smilingly shake hands as the Chairman prepares to announce the ingredient.
Shigeru Miyamoto never made an appearance on Iron Chef, but his most famous creation would have been right at home as a judge on the episodes featured in this week’s Episodes of the Week. (For those of you who do not know, Shigeru Miyamoto is the designer who created Mario for Nintendo.) This week’s episodes of the week theme is Mushrooms. I don’t remember any of the judges suddenly growing larger or gaining an extra life after eating any of these mushrooms, but I’ll probably watch the episodes again just to make sure. 🙂
