We are taking a break from adding new episodes this week as we prepare for a major addition to the collection next week. We plan to post a new episode review and probably one or two Beyond Kitchen Stadium videos for you this week.
Check back with us next week for an exclusive addition to the Iron Chef Collection. We have recently acquired one of the most sought after episodes of Iron Chef, one that never aired on Food Network. I can almost guarantee that you will not find this episode anywhere else on the web. (And believe me when I say I have been looking for this one for a while.) What is it? Come back on Monday, July 7th to find out. 🙂
Our slight variation to the famous rhyme is the clue to this week’s Episodes of the Week theme. While usually called “roe,” the edible portion of this sea creature is in fact not roe. (I’ll let you read the explanation of what it really is for yourselves.) Anyway, the theme for this week’s Episodes of the Week is Sea Urchin, which in Japanese is “Uni.”
- Sea Urchin (223) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Yuji Wakiya – Yuji Wakiya was actually announced as the new Iron Chef Chinese during the Millenium Special. That special did not air on Food Network, but we have a clip in Beyond Kitchen Stadium showing him being announced as a new Iron Chef.
- Sea Urchin (331) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Hisama Hirano
- Sea Urchin (526) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Binkou Ishikawa – (This episode did not air on Food Network)
- Sea Urchin (725) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Yuji Tateno
The following episodes may be found in our file database:Â 223, 331, 725

I’m sure every one who has watched more than a few episodes of Iron Chef has seen Mayuko Takata. (Click here for her Japanese page with a recent picture.) She was a frequent guest and judge on the program. I will admit that she has always been one of my favorite judges. (If for no other reason than I think she’s beautiful.) Anyway, I had never been able to find any of her other programs, until now. Be prepared to see Mayuko Takata in a setting very different from Kitchen Stadium.
This addition to Beyond Kitchen Stadium is the 7th episode of the Japanese drama Keizoku (aka Unsolved Cases), in which Mayuko Takata is a guest star. In this episode (O.A. 2/19/1999), Takata plays the young director of an art gallery where her father was murdered 6 years ago. Will the detectives of the unsolved cases unit be able to solve the mystery? (This episode is in Japanese, with English subtitles. And while these pictures are in black and white, the episode is in color.)
This video, along with all of our Beyond Kitchen Stadium videos, can be found in our video database.
I will have a few more Mayuko Takata videos to add in the weeks ahead. Do you have a favorite guest or judge that you have also seen on other programs? Let me know where you saw them, and we’ll do our best to track down the video. And as always, if you have any video or audio of a guest, judge, challenger, or other regular cast member, please let us know and we’ll post it for everyone to see.
Thanks to the sharp eyes of our visitors, some mistakes have been brought to our attention regarding some of our past Episodes of the Week posts. This time, we go back and pick up a few episodes we failed to include in our lists the first time.
Overtime Battles – One of our earlier EotW themes was Overtime Battles. It seems that a few OT battles slipped past us. While we can attribute two of them to the fact that we were only listing downloadable episodes when we first started (503/504, 544/545), one available OT battle was completely missed.
- Cod Roe (Tarako) (715)/Scallion (716) – Iron Chef Morimoto vs. Yusuke Yamashita
Tuna Battles – I missed a couple of episodes that week because I didn’t realize that the theme fish was considered tuna.
- Bonito (218) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Hiromi Funatsu
- Yellowtail (704) – Iron Chef Morimoto vs. Hiroyuki Hakogi
The following episodes may be found by searching our video database: 218, 704, 715, 716
New in the database this week: 715, 716, 218
Hopefully, enough people out there know about the song by Bread from the early 70’s to make this Episodes of the Week title seem not quite so strange. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the Episodes of the Week theme this week is young animal theme ingredients.
- Lamb (215) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Nakagawa
- Young Salmon (634) – Iron Chef Morimoto vs. Fujii
- Veal (637) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Kagata – One of the many female challengers who have beaten Chen
- Lamb (718) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Husser
- Suckling Pig (719) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Stelvio – this episode is sometimes remembered because Kaga boycotts the battle. Oh, and also the little piggy faces.

I was looking through the list of episodes available to be added to the Iron Chef Collection Video Database for this week when I noticed something rather unusual. Iron Chef Italian Masahiko Kobe only fought 23 battles in Kitchen Stadium. However, he faced challengers with the name Sakai 3 times in a span of 11 battles. (To the best of my knowledge, none of the challengers named Sakai were related to Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai.) This week’s Episodes of the Week theme is “How many Sakais does it take to beat a Kobe?” You’ll have to watch to find out if any of these three challengers has what it takes to defeat an Iron Chef.
(Sorry to disappoint all you Hiroyuki Sakai fans who expected to see Iron Chef French featured this week. I’ll do my best to make sure he is well represented next week.)
