When the revived Iron Chef ended its brief run, we were told to expect special episodes from time to time. This is the first of those specials.
American food isn’t just hamburgers and hot dogs. American chefs are becoming more of a force on the world stage. In April 2013, there were 6 American restaurants in the World Best Restaurant 50.
The three American challengers for this special are:
—Frank Ruta, owner/chef of Palena in Washington, DC.
–Tony Maws, owner/chef of Craigie on Main in Boston. (Follow him on Twitter)
–Eric Ziebold, head chef of CityZen at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, DC. (Follow him on Twitter)
The theme will be Beef for the all four quarters of the battle. The first three quarters will feature one-on-one matchups between the chefs: (Ruta vs. Suga, Maws vs. Kurogi, Ziebold vs. Wakiya). The fourth quarter will be a team match featuring all six chefs. Who will come out on top?

(Sorry it took me so long to get this posted. I was not able to find the episode until a good friend of the site sent me a download link.)
There is a special episode of Iron Chef airing July 4th in Japan. I will do my best to get a copy of it up here as soon as possible for you. Thank you to all the people who sent me the link for it.
(Thanks for the corrections. I knew it wasn’t anyone from Iron Chef America, I just worded it wrong.)
I am still on the lookout for the episode. I will put it up as soon as I can find it.
UPDATE July 21: I am in the process of uploading this episode right now. I don’t have time to watch it at the moment, so I can’t provide any comments, but I will try to do so sometime this week. In the meantime, feel free to post any insights in the comments section.
We knew today was coming, but it doesn’t make it easier. I was just a casual fan when the original show ended, so I didn’t experience the end of its run. I’m sad to see this version of the show go so soon, but it has been a fun 6 months. (I was actually in Japan not too long after the announcement of the revival was made, but I unfortunately was long gone before the episodes starting airing.) The new show did bring a spike in traffic, so it is pretty clear that there was some interest. Too bad Fuji pulled the plug when they did. Let’s hope they follow through with their promised specials. OK. On to today’s episode.
Don’t have time to read a full recipe? Your attention span wane after you read 141 characters? Good news. The nominee has “Twitter recipes” for you. Takemasa Kinoshita is the chef at a French restaurant in Tokyo. Apparently, the nominee was a bit of a “Yankii” when he was a teenager. By age 20, he was training at a 3-star restaurant in France. BTW, does he look familiar? If you are a super eagle-eyed fan or are like Sheldon Cooper and have an eidetic memory, you may remember him as an assistant to Rory Kennedy in episodes 503 and 504. The theme will be Takenoko. Let the final battle of new Kitchen Stadium begin.

SPOILER ALERT: Everything below this point will contain spoilers.

We all hoped the speculation about the early demise of the return of Iron Chef would turn out to be wrong. Unfortunately, it has been announced that the new Iron Chef will be officially ending after March. As of right now, there is only one more scheduled episode on March 22nd. We do now know yet what this means for the rebroadcasts of the original series on FujiTVONE.
The article was translated over at the Kitchen Stadium Message Boards. (I’ll post it here as soon as I get Miwa’s OK to do so.) Thank you so much to our friend in Japan, Miwa, for translating this article for us.
[The source is ORICON. They are credible. They are a provider of entertainment information and content; especially they are famous for ORICON charts. (like a Billboard charts in the US)
They said as follows (Sorry for my bad English but I did my best for the translation. Hope you understand):
It was revealed in a briefing session of program reorganization by Fuji TV on 3/1 that Iron Chef (Fri. 7:57pm), the revival of Ryori no Tetsujin, a program representing Fuji TV will be terminated in March.
They started to air the new show in last October but the show’s title, the time slot, iron chefs didn’t fit in the audience and they decided the termination of regular broadcast.
Mr. Tatematsu, General Manager of Editing, explained, ”Iron Chef is a high quality show and we can say it is FujiTV’s treasure. Currently we are struggling for the ratings. We think we have a time slot problem, too, so we would like to consider about a way to make it as special program and forward it into the next stage.”
As a trend of the latest audience, Mr. Arai, Chief of Editing & Producing bureau talked about the difficulty of fixing of new show, ”Not only they refuse something new but also they hate mannerism.”
From April, their another variety show ”Jinsei no Seikai TV ~ Korega Teppan! ~” will be scheduled to be promoted from occasional program to regular broadcast (to be aired in there). It is an information variety show with the theme of searching ”which is the correct way?” in a lot of “choice” scene in our life, such as crisis situation in survival scene or real problem in our daily life. The casts are under adjustment.]
The nominee is one of the top patissier in Japan. He heads Toshi Yoroizuka, a unique dessert bar in Tokyo. (Read first hand accounts of his unique restaurant HERE, HERE and HERE.) He is Toshihiko Yoroizuka. He will take on Iron Chef Suga in an all dessert battle. The theme ingredient is Ichigo (Strawberries). It’s Top Chef vs. Top Patissier. Who will taste sweet victory?

It’s a Ramen Shop challenge in Kitchen Stadium today. He makes over 500 kinds of ramen. One liter of his dashi base(?) costs 15000 yen. He is Hideki Irie, and he runs GENEI.WAGAN. (Read about the experience here: In Japanese, In English) He will be doing battle against Iron Chef French Yousuke Suga. The theme is Hotate (Scallops).
