I was looking through the list of episodes available to be added to the Iron Chef Collection Video Database for this week when I noticed something rather unusual. Iron Chef Italian Masahiko Kobe only fought 23 battles in Kitchen Stadium. However, he faced challengers with the name Sakai 3 times in a span of 11 battles. (To the best of my knowledge, none of the challengers named Sakai were related to Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai.) This week’s Episodes of the Week theme is “How many Sakais does it take to beat a Kobe?” You’ll have to watch to find out if any of these three challengers has what it takes to defeat an Iron Chef.
(Sorry to disappoint all you Hiroyuki Sakai fans who expected to see Iron Chef French featured this week. I’ll do my best to make sure he is well represented next week.)

The Iron Chef Collection has been around for four months now. We would like to thank everyone who has visited and contributed our site. We have the largest searchable/downloadable collection of Iron Chef episodes on the web. (At least, I think we do.) We recently passed 10,000 videos downloaded and watched. We currently have about 130 full episodes in the video database. And the good news is that we still have over 40 more episodes to add in the coming months. We have almost 40 videos in our Beyond Kitchen Stadium section with more on the way there, as well.
So, we would like to ask you for a little bit of feedback. What do you like about the site? What kinds of things would you like to see added to the site? What kinds of things would you like to see removed? Is there any kind of content or functionality you think would be a good addition to the site? (We can’t guarantee that we actually can do any of the things you suggest, but we’d like to hear it anyway.) Feel free to add a comment to this post or send us an e-mail.
I would also like to take this opportunity to reach out to any one who watched Iron Chef in the pre-Food Network days on channels like KTSF. I’d like to think that someone out there has an old tape or two in their closet with subbed or raw (unsubbed, undubbed) Iron Chef episodes. If anyone has any old videotapes of those episodes, please contact me. We would love to have an opportunity to copy/purchase your tapes and share the episodes with the visitors to this site.
This journey Beyond Kitchen Stadium takes us to the world of Japanese idols. Not the kind that Indiana Jones goes after, but entertainment idols. This clip comes from the television show Hello! Morning. We get to see the girls of Mini Moni, including Nozomi Tsuji, do battle to see who is the best. (Hopefully, you remember Tsuji from the BKS videos with Tenmei Kano and Kandagawa and Shu. If not, go watch them now.)
Tsuji Nozomi, Kago Ai, and Morning Musume member Konno Asami face off in a Cake Battle. It is more of a dessert assembly battle than a cooking battle, but it is still fun to watch. See the girls make kitchen blunders. See the girls use ingredients that have no business being anywhere near a cake (mayonnaise and what I think is squid, to be specific). See Tsuji and Kago at their “Top Two” best. The clip is in Japanese with no subtitles.
This video, along with all of our Beyond Kitchen Stadium videos, can be found in our file database.
Some theme ingredients in Kitchen Stadium were things found in kitchens around the world like chicken or carrots, but some of the themes were uniquely Japanese. This weeks Episodes of the Week theme ingredients are items that are somewhat common in Japan but maybe not so much in other countries.

Ishinabe vs. Jacques Borie
Originally Airdate: 12/19/93
Iron Chef, the Official Book episode# 10
Iron Chef Collection episode# 110
For Kitchen Stadium’s first Christmas battle, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) winner is brought in as challenger: Jacques Borie, who won the medal at age 36 in 1982.
Just as Chairman Kaga is about to summon the Iron Chefs, he asks if Borie understands Japanese. “Oh yes,” Borie assures him. Kaga calls on his Iron Chefs with special fervor, and Borie selects Ishinabe, “the so-called sauce specialist of French cuisine,” for a French-on-French battle. The two smilingly shake hands as the Chairman prepares to announce the ingredient.

Shigeru Miyamoto never made an appearance on Iron Chef, but his most famous creation would have been right at home as a judge on the episodes featured in this week’s Episodes of the Week. (For those of you who do not know, Shigeru Miyamoto is the designer who created Mario for Nintendo.) This week’s episodes of the week theme is Mushrooms. I don’t remember any of the judges suddenly growing larger or gaining an extra life after eating any of these mushrooms, but I’ll probably watch the episodes again just to make sure. 🙂
- Mushroom (234) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Hideki Osako
- Matsutake Mushroom (239) – Iron Chef Sakai vs. Masamitsu Takahashi
- Matsutake Mushroom (336) – Iron Chef Michiba vs. Minoru Noda – This battle featured one of the few American born challengers to visit Kitchen Stadium.
- Shiitake Mushroom (409) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Takaya Nakazawa
- Mushroom (444) – Iron Chef Chen vs. Daniella Ozik (This episode did not air on Food Network)
- Matsutake Mushroom (537) – Iron Chef Kobe vs. Fujio Imai (This episode did not air on Food Network)
- Maitake Mushroom (642) – Iron Chef Kobe vs. Takatsugu Sasaoka
- Porcini (643) – Iron Chef Morimoto vs. Marco Molinari – This episode is best remembered for the way the challenger makes his pasta.
- Jumbo Mushroom (727) – Iron Chef Kobe vs. Shoji Yamaoka
